Wine Tasting
Switzerland ’s vineyards have been described as those which ascend to heaven, on the not unreasonable grounds that the hilly vineyards of the Valais overhang one another, cling to the terrace above and suspended from the sky. The different altitudes are marked by a mosaic of soils and exposures, offering the vines a fabulous diversity of sites. The emblematic white wine of the Valais is the Fendant, reflecting the grape’s ability to adapt to the diverse soil types found in the region.
France might well boast the oldest vines in Europe but Switzerland ’s are undoubtedly the highest! Nor is its reputation to be sneezed at - the grand cru appellation makes higher demands than the more tradional AOC - being only awarded to a communal area by the cantonal government itself. But whether you be after a grand cru or the local plonk, a visit to the local vineyards is well worthwhile.
